Monster-A-GoGo's Shock-O-Rama Poster Show RECREATION # 137

January 15, 2017, 02:59:28 AM

Hi there. I'm B-A-C-K with my typical middle-of-the-month update. This is a somewhat "special" update. No, it's NOT a salute to the movie "CARRIE". Instead it is a remembrance, if you will, to an acquaintance of mine named Scott. I had met him through eBay about 10 years or so ago. He had sent me a note asking if he could buy a particular poster I had just purchased (back in the day when you could still see who the winning bidder was and contact them---before eBay changed it's privacy policy and did away with that). I did not sell him the poster...but we struck up a friendship of sorts. He was the first person i actually "knew" who also collected movie posters. Scott lived on the East Coast and was a few years older than me. We never met in person, but we talked on the phone, emailed, texted and occasionally sent real mail to each other.

Scott was kind of an odd bird, someone I probably would not have been friends with in "real life"--but he was a good long-distance poster friend. He was constantly stuck in the past or wondering why certain things didn't happen for him that happened for other people. He always felt like life had slighted him. He was obsessed with the movie "CARRIE", and I think he identified much too closely with the main character, always unliked, picked on, bullied, etc. A lot of times I thought Scott read far too much into things going on in his life or, in some instances, brought them on himself. But he really loved the movie so much that at some point last year he had his name legally changed to CARY.

Not long back I stumbled on an auction for a bunch of stuff I thought Scott/Cary would love. I had sent him photos and links to the auctions...but never heard back. For some reason, i thought he was mad at me. He had not texted/emailed me in some time and when i tried to call him, his phone said it was not taking incoming calls. Weird.

I bought several things from that auction. When i opened the box, inside were used tubes and envelopes containing the posters...all of them addressed to Scott. Super WEIRD! I tried to contact him about that--not a peep. I was thinking he had to sell stuff to make some money, figuring he'd been fired from his job at a library or something. Scott always wished it were the late 60s/early 70s. He loved the hippy look. The last photo of him I saw showed him with long hair that went beyond his hips. He looked like Cousin Itt from THE ADDAMS FAMILY. How would that fly at the library? Not very well, I guessed. So i was worried he may have been fired.

The same auction house I bought Scott's stuff from also has an eBay presence as I discovered when I stumbled on more of Scott's stuff for auction--including lots of CARRIE stuff and an autographed photo I had sent him as a gift once, signed "To Scott. I can see your dirty pillows. Piper Laurie.". Huh? How or why would he ever part with that CARRIE stuff? The blurb about the seller said he specialized in estate liquidations and that's when i had a sinking feeling... I sent a note to the auctioneer asking about Scott...and then Googled him. He was dead. The auctioneer told me later it had been suicide at age 53. Man! That and all of the surprise celebrity deaths towards the end of 2016 was a REAL wake up call that my own mortality could kick in at any moment. Geez!

I've been taking it easy on buying lately---but I had to bid on a lot of Scott's stuff. It just felt right that I should buy what I could, that he would have wanted me to.  Some of the things I already shared in past posts, like that SCREAM quad with the actors in the letters, for instance, were his (but I did not realize this yet when I bought them). We had talked about those and a few others he had---and he wanted me to get copies too.  I don't know... I suppose I should feel like a scavenger, picking up bits and pieces of his collection now that he is dead...but i don't feel that way at all. I think he would have wanted me to have these things. It kind of keeps him "alive".

Anyway, everything in this post was part of Scott's estate. Enjoy or don't.

CARRIE (aka CARRIE KILLER GIRL !?):

What the...!? Weird foreign (from where?) CARRIE poster with a strange subtitle and some sexy brunette in stockings and a black bra to entice the moviegoer...and she is NOT even in the movie! Ha! Uber cool in a funny way.

GAY LIBERATION:

Yes, Scott was gay. He mentioned this poster once but didn't really say anything else about it. I was going to let it go, but it just looked so rare. i've never seen it before (nor can i find a reference for it on IMDB...and yet it is clearly rated R. Is it a documentary? I have no clue.). I paid more than I wanted to for it, but feel reasonably sure I could make the money back--and MORE if I sent this to the right auction house. And, did I mention it is in "Gigantic Screenovision"? Zowie! The 4th Dimension!? Hmm...

ANDY WARHOL'S HEAT (review style):

I've been on a hunt for Warhol movie posters for a while. This review style is unique. I've never seen another...although I am sure it's not as sought after as the regular one sheets.

CARRIE (Argentinian):

What can I say? Scott, er...Cary was obsessed with CARRIE.

A BIGGER SPLASH:

Another gay title, I think. I'm not sure...but I know I have seen this poster at auction before and it has gotten some big bucks...so this may be headed for a resale soon. Sorry Scott. This poster is not working for me. Hmm. Maybe I am a scavenger after all?

CARRIE (French):

I'm guessing this is a re-release? Still a cool image.

ANDY WARHOL'S LONESOME COWBOY (German):

Another Warhol. How exciting. Wish it was a US poster though...

CARRIE (Spanish):

Bizarre but nice design. I think I've seen it used on a paperback book before.

CARRIE (Lobby card set):

As you know, I am NOT a lobby card person. I have a few---but generally stay away. But this set called out to me.

CARRIE (British Double Crown set?):

I'm not really sure what these are---but the two photos (from separate auctions) clearly belong together. It's my guess they are the British Double Crown set (or part of the set)? Would that be correct? I've never dealt with British Double Crowns before, so i'm just guessing. NOT in the best shape---some tears and missing paper, but unusual and I'm guessing fairly rare (?). Anyone know anything about these?

I bought other stuff of Scott's as well. Some listed before this post as I said...other stuff will come after. Thanks for indulging me in this odd tribute-like post to someone who was never even a member (and I DID TRY to get him to join several times... I do think he lurked around a bit).

Now go out and have a great finish to your January!

CHEERS!

The Shock-O-Rama Poster Show 2023: #10

Welcome back! I certainly did NOT expect to have any further posts with new purchases this 2023 calendar year, but here we are. Granted, most of these are holdover purchases from my temporary poster-buying insanity in October. I’d expected those to be the foundation for whatever post I kicked off the new year with. But now? I had a few more pick ups… Why hold back? Let’s send 2023 out with a real BANG! Christmas came a little early this year. Uh oh… The lights are dimming. Take your seats. Let’s see what I have for you this time… GIRL IN GOLD BOOTS:  Not a great poster, but one I’ve been after for a while. This flick is an exploitationer from legendary B man Ted V. Mikels (CORPSE GRINDERS, ASTRO-ZOMBIES, BLOOD ORGY OF THE SHE-DEVILS, etc.). I saw it years ago. I don’t remember much other than that there is a girl (who wears gold go-go boots) who is a dancer (and maybe sings?) and is somehow involved in the criminal underworld. Like a lot of Mikels’ films…it doesn’t leave an indelible m

Welcome! Get your tickets and take your seat. The Shock-O-Rama Poster Show is about to begin. I am still disabled and only getting worse…yet, uh, um…I’m spending money on my ADDICTION to posters that I really have NO BUSINESS doing. Why? Because I am STUPID. (But I LOVE staring at them…) Waaaaagh! Anyway—-my stupidity is your viewing pleasure (or however you want to term it…).  Here we go… THE LADY IN THE MORGUE (1942 RE-RELEASE) : This isn't something that I'd usually buy. I've never seen this old mystery/whodunit flick. Despite this being a re-release poster (The original, with completely different art, hails from 1938.), I decided to go ahead and buy this 81-year-old gem for several reasons. I like the monster-ish hands reaching in at the couple. I dig the purple/green color scheme. The old school font is awesome...and one of its co-stars is Barbara Pepper, who brilliantly played Mrs. Ziffel (Arnold the pig's "mom") on GREEN ACRES. Ha! The most important r

And, what!?! We're B-A-C-K!!! That was...quick. (It just seems that way as I delayed the previous post until I finished my write up on my Something Weird Video adrventure, which I had linked to the page. I've already been working on this one for several weeks.) Truth be told, though, about half of these became mine in a 12 hour period. It is no secret that I am now disabled. I live on a VERY modest income with very little in the bank to fall back on. There is a saying, "You can't take it with you." There should also be a saying that says "You can't enjoy it if you don't have it." That seemed to have been my mindset during a recent eMovieposter auction. Despite the fact that everything was on linen--there were so many titles I wanted. Things were fairly cheap...until the very end. But... Geez! Dipping into my meager savings was... EXTREMELY STUPID and FOOLISH.  But, it happened. Let's take a look: PRO BALL CHEERLEADERS: What the hell is this
