CURSE III: BLOOD SACRIFICE (video):
I don’t know what I was thinking when I decided to track down the posters for THE CURSE series. For those who have never seen it or heard of it, THE CURSE series is a mostly direct-to-video series of horror flick that are NOT related to each other at all, except by title. I have the theatrical (I think) one sheet for the original movie. I’m not sure if I have a copy of the part two poster or not, and I may have copies of parts three and four already… Or not. I am not sure. But here is the poster for CURSE III: BLOOD SACRIFICE. Yes, as you can, guess, it was cheap. Did I see the movie? I don’t remember. I may have, but I’m really not sure. I know I did see the first one. which was kind of lame. I think I saw the second one? Beyond that, it’s a VHS era blur.
CURSE IV: THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE (video):
That brings us to CURSE IV: THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE. I have no idea what happens in this movie. It’s just good to know that the title makers have up their game from the previous installment. Instead of the subtitle THE SACRIFICE, it is now THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE. Oooooo… Look out! From what little research I did on this series, I know that this movie was actually made a couple of years before the previous installment. It had just never been released before. As they are all unrelated, anyway, except by title, it didn’t really matter. This movie hails from 1988, but didn’t make it video debut until 1993. There apparently is a fifth movie in the series, CURSE V: BOLLYWOOD BLOODBATH that was released in 2008. I know nothing about that one at all. I’m not even sure there was any poster art for it. Since video stores have kind of gone by the wayside, I kind of doubt there are posters for it. But you never know. At least this one has a creepy guy passed out girl and some skulls. Oh boy. (It was also cheap.)
This is not the kind of poster I would normally buy. I will never hang this on my wall. THE STING was only the second movie I ever saw that was rated PG. The first one was WESTWORLD at the drive in on a double feature with the G-rated GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD. I remember when we were going to go see SINBAD, I rebelled against sitting through a PG rated movie. In hindsight, that was stupid of me. However, something about the PG rating and being only about seven or so unnerved me. I didn’t want to ruin my innocence I suppose. Of course, later, I couldn’t wait to get into our R-rated movies…And eventually ended up, sneaking into several. Ha! THE STING wasn’t my kind of movie. It was good and all, but it wasn’t my kind of movie. Yet, when I was younger, I was trying to get ALL the posters for all the movies I had seen. I could never get a copy of this poster. Long after I lost interest in this movie and long after I should’ve stopped looking to get a copy of this, here I am landing the poster… How many years later? More than 50! Ha! (Damn I’m old…)
SILENT NIGHT DEADLY NIGHT 5: THE TOY MAKER (video):
Lille the CURSE movies above, I’m not sure why I decided to buy this poster. I’m not really a huge SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT fan. While I do have the poster for the first three films, I believe the fourth and fifth are completely unrelated to the first and second (and third?). I saw this one and thought, why not? The poster for the fourth direct-to-video movie is rather boring. I may have it already though. If I have the first three posters, why not get the last two? I’ll have to look back through my stuff, but I’m not gonna make that much of an effort probably.
I’m not sure how I ended up with this poster. I already have a copy. Was it in a lot? Was it going for a low price? I don’t recall. While it is, in my opinion, the best film in the HELLRAISER series, the poster is kind of dull. It’s just Pinhead’s head. At least the first poster had him holding the puzzle box. Oh well.
I think I already have this, but I’m not sure. I didn’t see it until years and years after her to come out, but it’s reputation preceded the viewing.. I’d wanted to see it for years. When the sequels started coming out in the 80s, I rushed to see part two and part three. After that, I lost interest. When I finally saw the first one, it wasn’t all that fab either. I think I had built it up in my head to make it more than it really was.
I already have a copy of this poster, but I love this movie. When I eventually reclaim my dining room from the boxes that now inhabit it from my move, I plan to cover the walls with posters. I so hope I leave space for this poster. It’s not the greatest in the world, but I just love this movie. For being one of the satanic panic flicks from the 70s, inspired by the success of things like ROSEMARY’S BABY and THE EXORCIST, I thought this movie did a remarkable job. Director Richard Donner squeezed every penny of his meager budget into this film. With locations in Rome and England, and the stellar cast led by Gregory Peck and Lee Remick, this movie was just awesome and inspired three sequels, a remake, and the TV series. Billie Whitelaw was especially memorable as the creepily curdled version a Mary Poppins-like nanny devoted to Satan’s spawn! I believe she received an Academy Award nomination for her performance. Jerry Goldsmith deserved his Oscar win for the score and especially his Ave Satani number. Just—WOW! Soooo diabolically well done.
And that is my 10 for this time. I was thinking THE STING was the odd poster out. But when I actually took a look at the post when I was done, I thought that the two STAR TREK and the DEATH WISH poster we’re also kind of not the usual choices for my posts… Maybe not. There’s still something genre-y about them, whereas with THE STING there isn’t. Maybe I’m just keeping you on your toes, throwing things at you that you wouldn’t expect. Whatever. We are done for now. I’ll see you next time. Thank you for visiting. Cheers!
